Rail north of Watsonville does not make sense for Santa Cruz County. It will cost hundreds of millions of dollars to implement and tens of millions of dollars to maintain - annually, forever. Consider the Sonoma Marin SMART train. Even with almost three times our population (larger tax base, larger potential ridership) they are struggling - running out of money after only 10 years into a 20-year SMART sales tax measure. In March voters will be asked to extend it 30 more years. Even if the new measure passes, there still won't be enough money to complete what was promised to voters in 2008. If it doesn't pass, services and staff will need to be cut.
Vote on March 3. If you're in District 1, vote for Manu Koenig.
