Authorities hope two campers who are missing in Victoria's alpine region are surviving the harsh conditions by taking shelter and sleeping inside their car.

The search will continue on Thursday for Shannon Lowden, 21, and her boyfriend Caleb Forbes, 22, who have been missing for six nights in the vast and rugged terrain of the Baw Baw National Park after they failed to return from a weekend camping trip.

Police have found no trace of the pair despite a large-scale search by emergency services and dozens of concerned friends and locals.

Inspector Shane Cashman, from Morwell police station, said the search had already covered up to 2000 square kilometres.
