Richie Bennett is Port Vale's league top scorer after the club successfully argued the winner against Cambridge should be attributed to him.

The strike was initially given as an own goal against Cambridge defender Leon Davies but Bennett was adamant he'd got the crucial touch, a claim backed by head of media Max McLellan who spent some time going over the footage provided by his camera behind the goal.

Vale say: "The club can confirm that Richie Bennett has been officially awarded the goal that was scored against Cambridge United on Saturday 31st August.

"Following a request from the club to the dubious goals panel at the EFL to review the goal, the panel agreed that goal will be credited to Bennett.

With the change now confirmed, Bennett has scored three goals for the club since signing in the summer and will be looking for his fourth this Saturday when we host Plymouth."

Bennett's fellow new signing David Amoo also has three goals, although one of his came in the Trophy, against Shrewsbury.
